Summary

In his book "The Discovery of India", Jawaharlal Nehru describes the timely arrival of Mahatma Gandhi into Indian politics. After World War I, India was in a state of darkness, unemployment, and poverty. People were humiliated under British repressive rule.

"Gandhi came like a powerful current of fresh air... like a beam of light that pierced the darkness."

Gandhi's arrival brought a psychological change. He taught the lessons of fearlessness and truth. He exhorted people to stop exploitation and work for the welfare of the common man. Under his leadership, the fear of British rule disappeared, and people felt ashamed of being under foreign dominance.

Gandhi’s action was two-fold: challenging foreign rule and fighting social evils like untouchability and caste distinctions. He wanted an India free from intoxicating drinks and drugs, where all religions were respected. He was a link between India's past and future.
